Great Captain Island - Overnight Camping

Great Captain Island is a 17.2-acre Town-owned Island with a historic lighthouse that was built in 1868. There is also a 911 memorial and bird sanctuary.

Location: situated two miles out of Greenwich Harbor.

Ferry: Take the ferry from the Arch Street Ferry Dock. Check the Ferry Schedule for sailing days and times.

Tide Calendars

Campers may take any scheduled ferry out to the island the day of the permit and return to Arch Street Dock on any scheduled ferry the day after the camp out.

Private vessels are permissible but may not tie up to the dock at any time.

Parking available in the Island Beach Parking Lot on Arch Street, across the road from the dock.

Camping
A Greenwich resident may reserve one night between June 8 - September 7. (Except Friday, September 6).
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights only. Please check ferry schedule for departure times. Great Captain Island Ferry runs according to the tides.
Camping Permit - Set up camp after the last ferry leaves the island and pack up before 9 a.m.

No person shall be permitted on Islands between 10:30 p.m. and 7 a.m. except by permit.

Fees: $60 Reservation fee + $21 per person.
Camping ticket includes camping, ferry and parking per person.

Capacity: 25 (includes infants and children)

Permit Holder must be a Greenwich Resident, 21 or older to make a reservation and be in attendance the night of the permit.

Permit holder/campers are responsible for providing all camping equipment, food and drink. There is no potable water. Bring bottled water.

The resident Island Caretaker will introduce himself to you, check your permit, and verify headcount. The Greenwich Marine police are notified of all permits.

No bonfires, personal grills, amplified music or fireworks.
Before reserving, please read the Picnic, Clambake and Camping Regulations and Cancellation Policy.

Reservations must be made at least 14 days in advance.

Resident households may request one picnic and one camping reservation per year.
